You Can Control Drawing Labels in Vectorworks 2021
Drawing Label Styles in Vectorworks 2021
In Vectorworks 2021, you now have control over your drawing labels. In previous versions, you could control a few limited options but you couldn't control everything. 2021 allows you to create drawing label styles. These styles mean that you can choose what information is on the label, what size the label is, what fonts you're using, even where the lines are and what line weights are.
Out of the box, Vectorworks has some premade drawing label styles. I found that the easiest way to create my own drawing label style was to start with one of the standard Vectorworks ones and then edit it.
- Start by placing a selecting a standard Vectorworks drawing label.

- Go to the Object Info palette.
- Click on the Style pop-up menu
- Choose Edit Style...

This will open a dialog box so that you can choose what to do with the style.
- Click on the Edit Drawing Label Layout... button.

This is a special editing area at one-to-one scale for you to edit your drawing label style. In this area you can change the line weights, fonts, colours, and positions of objects.

In this image, I have added extra text and moved the locations of the drawing number. I want this label to show the back-reference location of the detail. This would be the section or drawing that had the original detail reference.

Once I have the text and lines in the correct location, I can edit the text label field.
- Select the required text.
- Go to the Object Info palette.
- Click on the Define Drawing Label Field...

This opens a dialog box for you to define the connections for the text.
- Click on the Parameter Name pop-up.
- Select the required parameter (the information you want).
- Click on the Add to Definition button.
- Click on the OK button

- When you have finished your editing, click on the Exit Drawing Label Layout button at the top-right go your screen.
- Click on the OK button to return to your drawing.
- Create a series of your favourite drawing labels and store them in you library file.

Interactive Workshops July 2020 - Space Objects
Space objects are a powerful part of Vectorworks and they are an important conceptual model of BIM (Building Information Modeling). The space objects are not just a 2D or 3D object, they also carry information about the room name, the required area, the volume, finishing information, etc. Spaces in Vectorworks are classified as special objects and they are very useful.
We had our online sessions in July and the recorded sessions are available here for subscribers...

Introduction to BIM for Landscape Course
It has been a while, but I have decided to start face-to-face courses. I used to have these courses on a regular basis in Auckland NZ. I am starting with the first course late March 2017. It’s already sold out, so don’t worry about the short notice, but I am planning on running these courses every three months. Use this contact page if you would like to book for this course.
There is a lot of talk about Building Information Modelling (BIM) in relation to architecture, but not in relation to landscape design. The principles behind BIM can be used to speed up the a production of your landscape projects and drawings. This course is an introduction to using BIM with Vectorworks Landmark and it has been designed to teach you the concepts of BIM and how to use the Vectorworks Landmark in the most productive way. It has all been brought together in a concise face to face course.

epodcast200 - Create Dimension Standards
When you create a Dimension Standard you will find that it is only in the file you created it. Unlike other resources, Dimension Standards cannot be exported to your library. They also do not appear in the Resource Manager. However, you can import Dimension Standards from another file. When you create a dimension standard there is an Import button on the dialog box. If you click on this button, you can navigate to the file that has the correct Dimension Standard. When you choose your Dimension Standards, they will be imported into your current file.

epodcast199 - Create Similar Object
When you are creating your projects, you often want to create more objects like to ones you already have. You could copy an paste an object, but then you have to move it and edit it. The Create Similar Object command sets the same tool, class, and tool settings as the original. This allows you to move a new location and start using the correct tool instantly.

epodcast193 - Plants and Row Spacing

Vectorworks 2017 introduced a change to the plant spacing. in the past your plant spacing was a specific number and that was it. Now, plant spacing can be a specific number or it can be "Best Fit." The idea of best fit is that Vectorworks will try to put as many plants as it can using the spacing that you have specified, but it will always place plant start click and at the end click. As well as that, Vectorworks added the option to have the row spacing different from the plant spacing.

epodcast192 - Custom Door Leaves

Vectorworks has the ability to create custom leaves for a door. You can use this to create any door shape that you want. The only thing to look out for is that the door leaf has to be a 3D Symbol. The 3D objects have to be simple (extrusions, add solids, subtract solids, or generic solids). You can also use this technique to create partial height doors (bar doors).

epodcast191 - Story Levels With Symbols

This is a new technique in Vectorworks 2017. You can use a level to control the insertion point of a symbol. In this example I have a symbol for a power outlet with a 3D component. If you create a level for this symbol, you can set the height of the symbol using the level. When you need to change the elevation of all the power outlet in that story, change the level elevation. All the power sockets on that story will update.

Landscape Special Interest Group January (am) 2017

This session looked at the problem of creating several curving driveways and paths. The texture should follow the curve and the path. We focused on using the Hardscape tool. This gives us the shape that we needed and there is also the ability to have the hatching follow the shape of the curve. We also looked at ways to create the paving pattern where the hardscape tool would not give us the shape we needed.

3D Modeling Special Interest Group – January 2017

This session is not a beginner session on 3D modelling, it is an intermediate/advanced session. We covered the concept of meshes, modelling history, generic solids, and a small amount of basic 3D modelling. The users wanted to look at how we could use the history of the 3D modelling to change objects.

Entertainment Design Special Interest Group January 2017

In this session we looked at the commands that are available in the Event Design menu. There are several commands here that make it very easy to create a 3D visualisation of an event. You can start by creating walls, creating stages, adding seating, and creating drawings. After creating the event, we created a coffered ceiling. Then set up views using cameras, and created perspective viewports.

Getting Started Special Interest Group January 2017

In this session we looked at the Resource Manager. This was introduced with Vectorworks 2017 and it does mean reorganizing your default content. In the past default content was in one folder (Defaults) but with Vectorworks 2017 the default content is now into folders (Defaults and Object Styles). So we looked at this concept of the default content and then we also looked at the concept of object styles.

Architect Special Interest Group December 2016 (pm)
In this session we looked at detailing and classes. When you import a detail from a manufacturer (which is often important) you often end up with several classes that you do not want, and they often don’t suit your naming convention anyway. So we looked at how we can import these details how we could manage the layers and classes and how we could change the details to suit our graphic style.
