Texture Beds in Vectorworks

I was teaching the landscape workshop today and the question of texture beds came up. A texture bed is a site modifier that does not change the site model, instead it gives a graphic representation of an area on the site model. I often think of this as throwing a blanket over the site model and it just drapes over the side but does not affect or change the contours.

Vectorworks Tip Retaining Wall

You can create a retaining wall on a site model by using a couple of site modifiers. They can be pads or contours.

The important part is to make sure that you use a grade limits to control the extent of the site mode change.

Vectorworks Tip 420 - What Is A Site Modifier?

In simple terms a site modifier is a special object that will allow Vectorworks to change (or modify) a site model. Not every object can be a site modifier, but there are a large number of objects that can be. A site modifier needs a three-dimensional object to tell Vectorworks where to make the changes to the site model (sometimes called a pad), and it also requires an object to limit the extent of the change (called a grade limits).

1508 - Roading in Vectorworks

This manual is the last manual on the series on site modelling on site modifying because the roading tools quite often used as site modifiers. Don't forget to refer to the previous two month's manuals (1506 and 1507) for more information on site modelling. This manual looks specifically at the six different roadway tools:
Roadway (Tee)
Roadway (Straight)
Roadway (Curved)
The Roadway (NURBS)
Roadway (Custom Kerb)
Roadway (Poly)
The last two tools are very powerful and most of the manual will focus on those.
The roading tools in Vectorworks are not designed to let you to become a road designer. They are there to allow you to add writing to your concept drawings, but they do not have sophisticated roading controls such as camber, tilt, roundabouts, etc.
The roading tools will allow you to draw a large range of road designs, and the road objects can be site modifies. If you need a refresher on-site modifiers for networks, look at the manual 1507 Site Modifiers. You do not need to use a site model if you want to draw a road, you can draw roads without it.
To refresh your memory, there are normally two parts a site modifier and a grade limits. When you create a road, you have the choice to Use Site Modifiers and a separate choice to Use Grade Limit.

Vectorworks Tip 334 - Adjust the Site Model Settings to Make Snapping Easier (2)

If you are going to use the Snap to Contour, you might want to adjust the Site Model Settings to give you the correct contour to snap to. The second method is to adjust the Start Contour Offset to change the elevation of all of the contours .

Vectorworks Tip #239 - Site Modelling - Site Modifiers - Multiple Pads

You can add more than one pad inside a Grade Limits (boundary). This allows you to create several site modifiers to create the changes you want inside a single Grade Limits.

Vectorworks Tip #216 - Site Modelling - Grid Entry Method

For some users, this is the default way of recording information on site. If you are going to use the grid entry method, it is very important that you survey the site using the same strict grid on site.

Vectorworks Tip #208 - Site Modeling - 2D Polys to 3D Contours

image032If you have a set of 2D polygons that represent contours, you can use the command 2D Polys to 3D Contours from the Landmark or AEC menu. This command will take your set of 2D polygons and convert them into 3D polygons at the appropriate heights. Then you can use these polygons to create your site model. Use this command with polygons that have regular elevation spacings.

Vectorworks Tip #204 - Site Modeling - Survey Input

image028Survey Input. There are several ways to import information into your files to use for site modeling. Some ways are more useful than others, depending on the information you get from site.

Vectorworks Tip #194 - Site Modelling - Stake Object

image014To create a Site Model you require 3D data for the spot levels of the site. There are several ways to do this. One way of creating your site model is to import an image file showing contours, then trace along the contours of the polygon tool. There is a command that will convert your 2D polys to 3D contours.

Landmark_SIG_059 Special Interest Group October (pm) 2014

In this session we looked at Keeping accurate time for a job whilst working in Vectorworks, the new site modeling features in version 2015, creating the banks of a pond that have a constant slope, and how to create underwater steps for the pond.

podcast 200 Site Modeling Changes in Vectorworks 2015

Vectorworks 2015 has several new site modeling improvements. The three main improvements of the changes to the visual appearance of errors in your site modeling and 2 new road tools. The changes to the visual appearance of errors in your site model are such a timesaver, several clients have pointed out how much time the small edition has saved them. The two new roads of very powerful and will certainly speed up your site modeling. The new Roadway (Custom Kerb) is really powerful, and allows you to make roads of various shapes. I recently use this tool to create a car park where each side of the car park sloped to a drain.
