Vectorworks Tip #062 - Basic Tools - Split Tool, Line Trim Mode

This tool has three modes, the third mode is used to split and trim objects with a line. This mode is ideal for trimming objects like polygons, rectangles, etc. With this mode, you get to choose which side of your split line will be retained. That makes this tool really useful for trimming up polygons, circles, landscape areas, and even viewports.

0070 iPad Tip - Microsoft Word on the iPad

Microsoft has just released an iPad version of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The first time you can now edit Word documents using Microsoft software on your iPad. In the past, there have been third-party applications that will allow you to edit your Word documents. These third party apps have not always worked consistently. Now at last you can use Microsoft software to edit your Word documents.

Vectorworks Tip #061 - Basic Tools - Split Tool, Split By Line

This tool has three modes, the second mode is used to split objects with a line. This mode is ideal for splitting objects like polygons, rectangles, etc. In this image you should notice that I'm trying to split a rectangle that is on top of two other rectangles. The new mode in Vectorworks 2014 allows you to split just the selected object. This is extremely useful. If you have previous versions of Vectorworks you can achieve the same thing using the Option all Alt key.

Vectorworks Tip #060 - Basic Tools - Split Tool

If you need to cut or split objects, you will find the Split tool ideal. It can split object, or it can trim them. There are three modes. The first mode is used to split an object and it works best with linear objects line walls, lines, etc. The second and third modes work best on objects that have an area, like polygons, floors, landscape areas, etc.

Vectorworks Tip #059 - Basic Trigonometry

When you're creating landscape areas, Vectorworks tends to draw these as if they were projected down onto a flat plane. In reality, the site may be sloping, so the area of the site is actually greater than the plan area shown on the drawings. The difference between the playing area and the actual area can be calculated using basic trigonometry.

Vectorworks Tip #057 - Upgrade Checklist

It's tempting to upgrade your Operating System (OS) when a new version comes out. However, there are some problems when you choose to upgrade.
The first question you should ask yourself is "do I really need to upgrade my operating system?" Quite often, you will find that upgrading your operating system will cause several of your programs not to run properly. You may find that your printer no longer prints, you may find that your phone/tablet no longer connects, and you might find that your Vectorworks will not run with your new operating system.

This is a Vectorworks preference, Which means it applies to all files. You will find this preference on the Session tab in the Vectorworks preferences. If you activate Use Sound, every time you move near a clickable point you will hear a click from your computer. Some people find this useful, other people find it extremely annoying. You can turn down the volume of the sound so that when it clicks it is quiet.

Vectorworks Tip #054 - Sending Large Files with Hightail

When you try to share files with another user, you are likely try to e-mail the files to them. But there is a limit to the size of the files you can e-mail, usually about 5 MB. One of the ways of sharing very large files is to use an online resource like www.hightail.com. Hightail allows you to create a free online account where you can upload your files and then send a link to that. You can also pay a subscription and have access to a large online storage facility we you can send very large files, up to 10 GB per file.

Vectorworks Tip #048 - Basic Tools - Contextural

The contextual menu is accessed when you right-click. If you right-click on an object you will get a menu that shows commands appropriate to the object, if you right-click in an empty part of the drawing you will get a different menu. The menus will change depending the objects you click on. The contextual menu is often the quickest way to access commands.

Vectorworks Tip #044 - Basic Tools - Viewports

Viewports are the most powerful way of creating drawings and Vectorworks. Viewports allow you to create drawings with different:

  • scales
  • layers
  • classes
  • class attributes
  • hatch settings
  • line weight settings
  • lights
  • view settings
  • rendering mode
  • crop

If you're not using viewports you're only running on half your cylinders.

Vectorworks Tip #042 - Preferences - Save Viewport Cache

This is a document Preference that tells Vectorworks to save the rendered viewports. The advantage of this is you do not have to update the viewports each time you open the drawing, which could save you a lot of time. The disadvantage is that saving the rendered viewports can make your files much, much larger. In a simple example, turning on the viewport cache made the file grow from 7MB to 12MB.

Vectorworks Tip #041 - Preferences - Create Dimensions in Dimension Class

This is a Document Preference that tells Vectorworks to place all dimensions into the Dimensions class. This is OK as long as you don't want to have dimensions for different drawings on the design layer. In that case, turn this off and have different classes for various viewports.

Vectorworks Tip #040 - Preferences - Associate Dimensions

This is a Document Preference. It is so important. It makes the dimensions associate with the objects so that when the object moves or changes size, the dimensions update automatically. This can save you from making dimensioning errors, it has saved me so many times. If you do not activate this preference, you will have to manually check all your dimensions if you change anything.

Vectorworks Tip #039 - Basic Tools - Usefully Name Viewports

It is easy to create a set of drawings with a lot of viewports and Vectorworks will automatically name them for you, but if you let Vectorworks do this for you, the viewport name will not let you see where that viewport has been used. In this image you can see some of the viewports have the viewport number/sheet number. Other viewports tell you what they are. This makes it easy to know where these viewports are located.

Vectorworks Tip #038 - Basic Tools - Consistently Use Classes

It's so important to consistently use classes when you creating drawings. if you're not consistent about using classes, you going to have a lot of trouble making sense out of your drawings. You will find that things you want to appear don't, things you want show up won't. Then you'll say that Vectorworks is difficult to use. It's not Vectorworks's fault, it's your fault for not being consistent with your classes.
