BIM_SIG_016 Special Interest Group January 2013

In the session we talked about creating template files. When you create a template it is tempting to put everything in the template that you think you will need. Unfortunately, this creates a very heavy template file with lots of textures, hatches, line types, and symbols that you might never need.

This week i posted the following blogs:

Interactive Workshops January 2013
http://learn.archoncad.com/2013/01/10637/interactive-workshops-january-2013/

Design layers and classes are the two most important organising concepts that
you need to understand in order to create drawings in Vectorworks. I still find
some users are confused about when to use a layer and when to us a class to
organise their drawings. I use three simple rules to decide when I need a new
class, and three simple rules to decide when I need new design layers.

epodcast169 - When to Use Symbols
http://learn.archoncad.com/2013/01/11279/epodcast169-when-to-use-symbols/

Symbols are generally thought of as relatively small repeating objects. So first
of all you should use symbols whenever you need to repeat something, like
sanitary fixtures, light fixtures, furniture, and so on.

0065 Setting up a .mac Email account on an Android Tablet
http://theipadtutor.com/2012/12/30/0065-setting-up-a-mac-email-account-on-an-android-tablet/

When you get an android tablet you need to have a Gmail account in order to
connect to the application store, but what if you want to use a .Mac account to
collect your email? When I first got my android tablet I thought it might be
quite difficult to collect emails from my Mac accounts, but it's turned out to
be reasonably simple.

0064 Starting your Android Tablet for the First time
http://theipadtutor.com/2012/12/30/0064-starting-your-android-tablet-for-the-first-time/

When you first start your tablet or phone for the first time, you will have to
go through a series of  dialog boxes to set up your device. Generally, it's
easy to set up your tablet with a Gmail account. If you go to Gmail account then
there's only a couple questions to answer and your device will be up and
running.

Updated IPad apps Week 52 2012
http://theipadtutor.com/2012/12/30/updated-ipad-apps-week-52-2012/

This week I found my iPad listed these apps for updating. Most of the updates
look minor except for Documents 2 and Bamboo Paper. Documents 2 edits Microsoft
office office documents, Bamboo Paper is a sketching program.

0063 Connecting Bluetooth Keyboard to an Android Tablet
http://theipadtutor.com/2012/12/30/connecting-bluetooth-keyboard-to-an-android-tablet/

I have just bought a new bluetooth keyboard to use with my Nexus 7 from my local
computer place. I know I can use the onscreen keyboards, but for a lot of
typing, I like to use a full keyboard. This one was cheaper then the Apple
keyboards i have used in the past, so I thought it would be worth a try.

0062 Google Chrome on an Android Tablet
http://theipadtutor.com/2012/12/27/0062-google-chrome-on-an-android-tablet/

Google Chrome is a web browser that is available on many different devices. It's
the web browser that I tend to use all the time on all my different computers
and mobile devices.

0061 Introduction to an Android Phone
http://theipadtutor.com/2012/12/27/0061-introduction-to-an-android-phone/

When I read blogs about iPhones and Samsung phones and when I look at adverts in
magazines and on television I get the impression that android phones and iPhones
are interchangeable. The reality is that android phones and iPhones work
completely different underneath their user interface.

0060 Connecting a Google Nexus 7 to a Mac
http://theipadtutor.com/2012/12/27/0060-connecting-a-google-nexus-7-to-a-mac/

You might think that you can connect the Google Nexus 7 directly to your
computer. On a Macintosh this often does not work, but there is a solution.

Movies Using Google Nexus
http://theipadtutor.com/2012/12/26/movies-using-google-nexus/

It's taken awhile, but I finally have been able to connect my Google Nexus 7
tablet to my computer to make movies. This means that I will now be able to
upload movies showing you how to use your Android tablet 2 to its full
potential.

This week i posted the following blogs:

Landmark_SIG_017 Special Interest Group December 2012
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/12/10679/landmark_sig_017-special-interest-group-december-2012/

This is the last  landmark special interest group session for 2012. It gives us
the opportunity to wrap up anything that's outstanding for the subscribers this
year.  A consistent theme for the Landmark special interest groups this month
has been planting. Vectorworks 2013 has a new dialog box for creating your
plants and the new concept for the definition and the settings for each plant.

Build Your Gingerbread House Today using Vectorworks
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/12/10667/build-your-gingerbread-house-today-using-vectorworks/

At this time of year my family makes a gingerbread house. When we started to do
this, we decided that a store bought ginger bread house wasn't acceptable, we
could design our own house. I didn't take me long to realise that I could use
Vectorworks with BIM principles to create the model and drawings for the
gingerbread house.

Landmark_SIG_016 Special Interest Group December 2012
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/12/10659/landmark_sig_016-special-interest-group-december-2012/

In this session we looked at two major topics; creating a landscape budget using
landscape areas, and creating plants and adding them to your library.
Vectorworks makes it very easy to find areas and calculate the percentages of
areas in relation to each other. If you create your plants and store them in
your library, it becomes very quick to use them.

epodcast168 - Changing the Computer File Extensions
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/12/10656/epodcast168-changing-the-computer-file-extensions/

When you install a new computer program, the program uses something called the
file extension (the three letters after the dot on the filename). Often, when
users install a new version of Vectorworks, they do not want the new version of
Vectorworks to open the old files, so they choose to keep the Association with
the old version of Vectorworks.

But what can you do when you want all your Vectorworks files to open with the
new version of Vectorworks?

BIM_SIG_015 Special Interest Group December 2012
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/12/10644/bim_sig_015-special-interest-group-december-2012/

The session was intended to be an open question-and-answer session. My aim was
to cover several topics. However, there were two main topics that came up in the
session. The first topic was space subjects and how to edit the labels, and the
second topic was default content.

Comments on Dealing with Walls - Part 1

A subscriber has just sent me  a comment on my web site. It's nice to hear from satisfifed customers...

Thanks. I’m a late starter to your subscription but wanted to say how great it is!! First wanted to say that I subscribed because of the story you posted about the fellow who took your advice about taking the time during the “down-time” of the economy = workload and really learning vectorworks. As soon as I subscribed I got a couple jobs and have been eager to learn what you are presenting.

Android vs iOS
http://theipadtutor.com/2012/12/03/android-vs-ios/

Last Christmas I had an argument with my brother about android vs iOS. He
believes that the closed system of iOS is bad, and the open system of Android is
better. I don't believe it's as simple as saying one is an open system therefore
it's good, the other is a closed system therefore it's [...]

Guide to Residential Concept Design for Vectorworks

Many of my clients want to use Vectorworks just for conceptual design. This means that the users often want a cut-down Vectorworks interface that just shows the tools they want, to make it faster to draw.
Often these users do not want to draw the walls of the building, they want a quick way of modeling the building, a way to see the building on the site, and they want to be able to check the building with a solar study.

In this session we looked at getting started with the project, based on
information that had been measured on-site. In the situation the information was
not imported from a survey, it was actually measured by the people in the office
when they visited the site. The methods of measuring were a theodolite and a
tape measure. This is enough information to give the heights in the setting out
from known points on the site.

In this meeting we continued our series on getting started with Vectorworks
Landmark. An important part of creating a landscape plan is creating plants. In
Vectorworks 2013, the plant preferences have been changed. There are now two
dialogue boxes that control plant settings. The new settings with the two
dialogue boxes allows for more flexible plant placement.

This week, the following posts were added to the learn.archoncad.com web site.

BIM_SIG_014 Special Interest Group November 2012

The Vectorworks stair tool was introduced for Vectorworks 2011, but this still
seems to be some confusion about how to use the stair effectively. At first
look, the stair looks powerful but complicated. It's important to understand the
concept behind the stair so that you can use the stair quickly and easily. If
you work with the concept of the stair, it works really well, but if you try to
work against the concept of the stair you will have trouble.

When stories were introduced with Vectorworks 2012 there was a lot of discussion
about how to use stories and whether you could use stories in a flexible way to
create the type of buildings you wanted. There was also a lot of discussion
about how to create split-level houses using stories. The common answer is that
you can't use stories to create a split level house, but this is wrong. You can
use stories to create a split level house and in this special interest group we
looked at that particular issue.

[The iPad Tutor] Weekly Digest 03

This week, the following posts were added to theipadtutor web site:

0055 Answer a Phone Call with a Message

With iOS 6, Apple introduced a new technique when you're answering your phone.
Instead of just answering or turning your phone off is now a new option.

0054 Google Earth

Google Earth is a great way of viewing maps online. Really there more than just
maps, many of the American cities now have 3-D buildings and terrain. This
allows you to really feel what it's like to be in a place.

0053 Google Drive

Google Drive is an online storage facility giving you free 5 GB of online
storage. Along with the storage there is also an application for your web
browser and for your mobile devices.

0052 Safari - Find on Page

In my movie about Google Chrome I showed how to search for information on a
particular page, without searching the entire Internet. This facility is also
available on Safari.

0051 Google Chrome

Google Chrome is a direct competitor to Safari, the web browser on your iPhone
and iPad. Once you have downloaded the Google Chrome application you can access
Google Chrome from the main Google app (the Google search app).

0050 Google Search

Google has made several applications for the iPad or iPhone. The applications
can be downloaded from the App Store. All you need to do is to search for Google
and you will see all the applications. All these Google applications are free.

Referencing a Design Layer From a Separate File - Using a layer import for
Workgroup Referencing keeps your work in line with the referenced file. This
method is better when you have to send your work to a consultant.

Referencing (Workgroup Reference) - Part 2

Referencing for Design Layer Viewports - You can reference a file using a
Design Layer Viewport. This allows you to move or rotate the reference.

Viewport Cache - For adding information to elevations, make sure you turn on
the viewport cache.

Viewports - Part 4

Edit Viewport Crop - If you get the crop wrong in a viewport, edit it.

Viewports - Part 3

Right Mouse Click to Edit Viewport - This is such a quick way to edit the

Design Layer Viewports - Design layer viewports replace layer links, they allow
you to link information from one or more layers (even from another file) to the
destination layer.

Viewports - Part 1

Creating Sheet Layer Viewports - You should be using sheet layer viewports to
create drawings, they are the fastest, most powerful way.

Customising Vectorworks - Part 2

Workspaces - Tool Palettes - You can change the tools you have on the palettes.
Get rid of the tools you do not use, make the tools you do use easier to get to.
Add hot keys for fast access to tools.

Customising Vectorworks - Part 1

Workspaces - Menus - You can change the way Vectorworks appears. Get rid of the
commands you do not use, make the commands you do use easier to get to. Add
keyboard shortcuts.

Building a Symbol Library - Part 3

Building a Symbol Library - Collect all your symbols together in a library, but
don’t forget to give is a structure to make it easy to use.

Building a Symbol Library - Part 2

Editing a Symbol - Once symbols are created, they can be edited.

Building a Symbol Library - Part 1

Creating a Symbol - Create symbols for objects you use on a regular basis.

podcast142 Editing Property Line Text Size

If you have a property line, you can change the font size, the font type, and so
on by using the text menu. But it's quicker to use a text style. With a properly
constructed text style, you can drag-and-drop the text style onto your property
line to create consistent text with the other parts of your drawing.

cadmovie876 - Stairs - Part 8

Circular Stairs -  The Stair tool also has the ability to make circular
stairs.

cadmovie875 - Stairs - Part 7

Stair Tool - U-Stair (Dog-leg Stair) - the Stair tool can make U-Stairs ( dogleg
stairs) with the landing or with winders, depending on the options you choose in
the configuration.

cadmovie874 - Stairs - Part 6

Stair Tool - Stair with Landing - The previous movie used a simple type of stair
to demonstrate the stair tool. But the stair tool can make more complex  stairs
including stairs with landings.

cadmovie873 - Stairs - Part 5

Stair Tool - Straight Stair - The stair tool has a completely different way of
working from the custom stair tool. This can cause some confusion if people try
to use their working methods from the custom stair on this tool.

cadmovie872 - Stairs - Part 4

Custom Stair - Other Stair Options -The custom stair is a flexible stair, and
you can make very complex stair with it. To use the stair effectively, you need
to understand the basic concept behind the stair.

cadmovie870 - Stairs - Part 2

Circular Stair - There is a very simple circular stair which uses the same
concept as the simple stair above. Unfortunately you will have to add this stair
to your workspace.

cadmovie869 - Stairs - Part 1

Simple Stair - The Simple Stair tool can be used to create your stairs at
concept stage. This tool is only available on the Landmark and Fundamentals
workspaces. But if you want a fast simple stair, then this is the tool to use.

cadmovie871 - Stairs - Part 3

Custom Stair - Straight Stair - The Custom Stair tool is designed to allow you
to create a range of complex stairs. You can create stairs with several landings,
circular stairs, stairs with landings at any angle, and you have more control
over the landings. If you have Vectorworks 2009, the custom stair is called the
Stair Tool. The Custom Stair is not avaialble if you have Vectorworks
Fundamentals.

Floors, Slabs, Columns and Pillars - Part 8

Using Pillars to Join Tricky Walls - Use Pillars to join several walls together
when the wall join won’t work.

Floors, Slabs, Columns and Pillars - Part 7

Pillars - Use Pillars to help draw plans where walls find it hard, where walls
are tapered in plan, where there are old fireplaces and so on.

Floors, Slabs, Columns and Pillars - Part 6

Slab Style Library - The slab styles are stored in the same library as the wall
styles.

Floors, Slabs, Columns and Pillars - Part 5

Slab Styles - The slab works like a horizontal wall, and you can create slab
styles that make it easy to create complex slabs. Slab styles work with wall
styles.

Floors, Slabs, Columns and Pillars - Part 4

Editing Slabs - A Slab can be edited to create holes, set-downs, or voids under
the slab.

Floors, Slabs, Columns and Pillars - Part 3

Slab Tool - The Slab tool is used to create more complex slab objects. Slabs
can auto-bound to walls, which makes it very quick to use.

Floors, Slabs, Columns and Pillars - Part 2

Editing Floors - Use floors for the floor of a building, for flat roofs, or for
any slab type object.

Floors, Slabs, Columns and Pillars - Part 1

Floors - Use floors for the floor of a building, for flat roofs, or for any
slab type object.

Viewing - Part 4

Saved Views - A saved view makes it quick to return to a view. Use saved views
for perspectives, blow-ups of the plan and rotated views.

Viewing - Part 3

Rotated Plan View - This is a really useful technique for rotating your view,
without actually rotating the information on the drawing.

Viewing - Part 2

Snap Loupe - Using the Snap Loupe makes it easy to zoom in temporarily.

Viewing - Part 1

Zooming - You can zoom into a drawing use a few different ways.

SST_1211 - Stairs

I've spoken to several users that seem to struggle with the stair tools. There
there's more than one stair tool that you can use in Vectorworks. On the
Fundamentals and Landmark workspace there is a very useful stair called the
Simple Stair,  then there is the Custom Stair, and finally on the Architect
workspace is the stair tool. The Stair tool is a very powerful but complex tool
for creating extremely accurate stairs.
