Respect History and Teach Fundamentals

 https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/y2DadSrljKb

IIn this episode, we delve into the timeless principles of architecture and urban design with the esteemed architect Terry. Our guest offers profound insights into the future of architectural technologies, stressing the importance of respecting and recycling existing buildings to create sustainable and financially sound urban spaces. Terry's views challenge the contemporary trends, encouraging a blend of historical awareness with modern efficiency.

Terry emphasizes the need to maintain the human scale in design and highlights the significance of proportion and detail in creating buildings that are not only durable but also require minimal maintenance. He cautions against the blind pursuit of the new, advocating for a smarter approach to urban expansion that considers environmental and societal impacts alongside technological advancements.

Terry's take on modern technology, especially AI in architecture, is one of cautious optimism. He acknowledges the efficiency and speed at which AI can generate models and alternatives but raises concerns about losing the personal touch that traditional hand-drawn designs carried.

Key Takeaways:

  • The importance of respecting and preserving the existing urban fabric for environmental, financial, and historical reasons.

  • Recycling of buildings as both a sustainable practice and a means of maintaining the timeline of a city's history.

  • The fundamentals of good design remain constant, including human scale, proportion, and the functionality of spaces.

  • The impact of AI on architectural visualization and design is both an opportunity and a challenge, requiring careful management to ensure practical outcomes.

  • The foundation of architectural training should emphasize appropriateness and understanding client briefs to create purposeful and beautiful buildings.

The Architectural Technologist Podcast - Embracing Simplicity and Critical Thinking

https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/JY8T9576VJb

In this insightful episode, Jonathan delves into the significance of embracing simplicity in both lifestyle and education, drawing parallels from Edward de Bono's book on simplicity. The discussion takes a deep dive into how Jonathan has practically applied de Bono's concepts to his architectural technology classes, promoting a minimalist approach to critical thinking and learning.

Jonathan reflects on de Bono's idea of "teaching backwards" and shares his strategy for relating new teaching material to students' existing knowledge bases. He exemplifies this through a manual drafting lesson that connected drawing techniques to physical constructions the students had previously encountered. Simplifying content and restricting word count in assignments encourages students to communicate effectively and think critically, a practice inspired by de Bono's work. Key points of consideration include the integration of other fundamental texts for architectural students, which delineates essential techniques and principles in the field. The conversation touches upon the notion of how simplicity in design and education doesn't equate to ease but rather the distillation of complexity into its most effective and clear forms. • Embrace simplicity in lifestyle and educational practices to enhance learning and understanding. • Use the concept of "teaching backwards" to connect new material with prior knowledge. • Simplified content in assignments encourages clarity, conciseness, and critical thinking skills. • Understanding the importance of lateral thinking in problem-solving, as proposed by Edward de Bono. • Recommending key resources for architectural students to develop foundational skills and knowledge in the field. Eye Care for Africa

Last weekend I met Niall McCormack at a party and he told me about his goal, creating an eye care facility in Africa (https://www.eyecareforafrica.org.nz). The purpose of this is to:

It is Eye Care For Africa’s goal to work with these orphanages and other organisations to provide eye care to some of the most marginalised groups in the countries of Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda & Kenya.

There are so many children whose eye sight is in dire need of appropriate attention, children with such conditions as cataracts. We are working with the teams at ground zero to help train staff and give these children the best possible eye care solutions.

Eye Care for Africa was founded in 2017 by Hawkes Bay based Optometrist Niall McCormack. It was formed to provide real eye care to some of the most marginalised groups in the countries of Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Kenya.

I was really amazed that Niall wanted to do so much for others, just to make their lives better. I was amazed that someone could dream so big is to create an eye hospital in a foreign land. When it comes to having big goals and visions, I realise that I can do a lot more to help people.

My discussion with Niall inspired me to help out. It made me feel that I could do more to help, so I have offered to help with social media and Vectorworks modeling. This is going to be my donation; putting time, energy, and creativity into the project.

If you think that what Niall is doing is valuable, please consider donating to his project.

Don't be surprised if you see a lot of posts from me showing the development of the project. If you like this, please share and comment.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwvftfxlvkvJb6BBr2eqRpw/join I saw somebody struggling to create a bi-part door and flip it. this is my suggestion, you can measure the door but this might have an affect on your door schedule, you can change the size of the second leaf and make the door swing flip.
