Creating a Gable roof with Vectorworks 2010

This is the starting shape for the roof, the plan of the walls. We want a roof with two roof planes, and a gable to the left and right.

  • Select the polygon.
  • Go to the Menu Bar.
  • If you are using Vectorworks architect, choose AEC > Create Roof...
  • If you are using Vectorworks Landmark, choose Landmark > AEC > Create Roof...

  • Create the roof with the settings you need for this project.

The resulting roof. The roof always starts off with hip roofs all round.

  • Go to the Basic toolset.
  • Choose the 2D Selection tool.
  • Click on the blue handle at the left side of the roof.
  • Make this roof plane a gable.

  • Click on the blue handle at the right side of the roof.
  • Make this roof plane a gable.

So far the roof is looking better, but it is still not what we want.

The trick is to convert each roof plane into a gable, starting with the first plane.

Then the next roof plane.

The roof is half way there.

Convert the next roof face to a gable.

And the next roof face.

When you finish the last roof face, you end up with the roof you want.

This topic is one of the topics from my Vector-workout Guide to Productivity, available from my web site. You will find there are hundreds of movies to help you use Vectorworks effectively.

Hi Jonathan!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge on creating a Gable roof. It looks so easy to install roof but I think I can't do that alone since I'm a girl.

When we renovated our home last year, we hired an expert in roofing. Calgary, is where we currently live, has a lot of professional Calgary roofers. So we didn't encounter any hassle in renovating our roof.
