Vectorworks Tip #023 - Preferences - Use Occluded Selection and Snapping

This is a Vectorworks preference that will speed up the way that you work in 3D by making it easier to snap not to the parts of the model that you see. Instead of snapping being based on the stacking order, the snapping will be based on the way that the objects appear in the view.

This preference is one of the Vectorworks preferences. To activate this preference, you have to open the Vectorworks Preferences from the Quick Preferences menu on the Tool bar. It it used to center objects in the drawing window when you change views. This makes the preference very useful in 3D modelling when you often change the view.

The Use Layer Colors preference is one of the quick preferences that you can activate on the toolbar. It is used to activate or deactivate the layer colors that you can assign to your layers. Vectorworks Tip #012 - Preferences - Zoom Line Thickness

Another quick preference is Zoom Line Thickness. This preference is designed to help you see your line weights by emphasising thick lines. The more you zoom in the more it emphasises the thicker lines.

This elevation has some lines thicker than the others, but with Zoom Line Thickness not activated, it is very difficult to see where the heavy lines are.

This is the same elevation with Zoom Line Thickness activated.  It is now easier to see where the thick lines are on the elevation.

Vectorworks Tip #009 - Quick Preferences

The right-hand end of the Tool bar contains the Quick Preferences. These are Vectorworks and Document Preferences that you might want to change quickly.

There is a Utility pop-up menu on the right side where you can choose the preferences that you want to appear. You don't need to have them all, just choose the ones that you use a lot.

Vectorworks Tip #008 - Data Bar and Edit Group Button

The Data Bar and Edit Group Button on the Tool bar, by the Quick Preferences, can really speed up your drawing.

Setting the option to Allow numeric keypad for instant data bar activation makes it instant to get into the Floating Data bar. This means that you can just start typing in the size you want something and it goes straight in.

Combine that with a double tap on the Enter key and you have the fastest ever way to draw.

Vectorworks Tip #006 - Selection Tool - Connected Walls Mode

The last mode, on the Tool bar for the selection tool is for the Connected Walls mode. This mode is only available if you have Vectorworks Architect, or one of the designer packages.

This mode connects walls that are joined together, so that when you move one of the walls the others automatically extend to maintain the joints. If you want to move a wall without extending the adjacent walls, turn this mode off.

Vectorworks Tip #005 - Selection Marquee Shapes

The Selection tool has a mode group that allows you to choose the shape of the selection marquee. Changing the shape of the selection marquee can speed up or slow you down depending on what you are working on.

I usually leave the selection marquee on the way Rectangular Marquee Mode. In this mode Vectorworks will select all the objects totally enclosed, as do the other modes, but this mode is quickest equals only takes two clicks.

Try choosing the next mode (Lasso Marquee). In this mode, you drag your lasso around the objects that you want to select.

The last marquee mode is the Polygon Marquee.  This allows you to draw a complex shape for the selection marquee, and it requires you to click at each corner of the marquee.

Vectorworks Tip #004 - Selection Tool

One of the first things you should learn how to do is to control the Selection tool. I know it sounds like a basic tool, and it is, but it is also very useful and has a lot of subtlety.

The fourth mode  is used control wall insertion, which controls the ability to insert objects in walls, including doors windows etc. If this mode is not activated, you will find it impossible insert doors and windows into walls and when you render the walls the doors and windows will not render correctly.

There are also times we want to turn this off. When you're moving a door or window along the wall it's good idea to turn this mode off so you do not accidentally pull the door and window out of the wall.

You might also want to turn this mode off when you're placing stairs, toilets, wash basins and so on.

Vectorworks Tip #002 - Selection Tool

One of the first things you should learn how to do is to control the Selection tool. I know it sounds like a basic tool, and it is, but it is also very useful and has a lot of subtlety.

The second mode allows  interactive rescaling (reshaping) on single objects only. This is my favourite way to use the selection tool. This allows you to edit single plants, callouts, but if you select group of things reshaping is disabled.

Vectorworks Tip #001

One of the first things you should learn how to do is to control the Selection tool. I know it sounds like a basic tool, and it is, but it is also very useful and has a lot of subtlety.

The first mode disables all interactive rescaling , which you might think of as reshaping. If you disable all reshaping, you will be unable to reshape anything, including callout and plant tags. So watch out for this.

Vectorworks Tip #003

One of the first things you should learn how to do is to control the Selection tool. I know it sounds like a basic tool, and it is, but it is also very useful and has a lot of subtlety.

The third mode allows interactive rescaling (reshaping) on all objects. This is not the normal way that I use this tool. The reason I don't tend to use the tool this way Is that allows you to Reshape all these selected objects. Sometimes, you might want to move the objects but with this mode you can accidentally end up reshaping them.

It's not about Resolutions, Its About Plans

At this time of the year many people take the opportunity to reflect on the previous year. Hopefully, it has been successful year for them, and they look at the coming year with an eye to see what they can improve. Many people make New Year's Resolutions with the hope that they will help them to achieve more in the coming year. Some quick research suggests that 80% of New Year's resolutions are broken in the first two weeks.

The reason that most New Year's Resolutions are broken so soon as because the resolutions do not have true goals or plans to achieve those goals. Often a New Year's resolution is a week wish, not a goal. By definition, a goal has to have a measurable result and it has to have a time limit. Without a measurable result or a time limit our goal is nothing more than a resolution.

For example, you  Resolution might say "I want to lose more weight." So if you lose a quarter of a pound (250 g) you have achieved your resolution, but have you really lost much weight? You could of course lose this weight just by weighing yourself before dinner. A goal on the other hand would say that you want to achieve a specific weight, say 70 kg, by a certain date, say Christmas. The difference with this goal is that it has a measurable result (the desired weight) it also has a date to achieve this by (Christmas). This also allows you to measure your progress towards the goal. Let us say for example that you started out at 80 kg and by working hard through the year you achieve your weight of 71 kg by Christmas. You have not actually achieved your goal, but on the other hand you may have done very well to get so close.

In a recent newsletter I told you that it is time to start making your plans for 2014 and I gave you five steps to help you do this. This month I want to reinforce the idea that you need create goals and you also need to create plans to help you achieve those goals. In the example above, you might help yourself to achieve your weight by giving up sweet food. That might be all you need to do to help achieve your goal.

To get better at Vectorworks one of the plans you could make is to attend regular monthly meetings. The Feedback  from the users who do attend the regular meetings is that they have now learned more about Vectorworks since attending the online sessions than they knew before. One of my subscribers has been using Vectorworks since 2008, that he is learned more about Vectorworks from attending the online sessions since June 2013 than he ever knew before. He thought that he knew Vectorworks pretty well, but now he is absolutely astounded at how powerful Vectorworks has become. He is now committed to attending the monthly sessions.

In 2013 the subscription service produced 12 manuals with 144 movies linked to those manuals. As well as that we recorded 42 movies of the workshop sessions,  23 Landmark Special Interest Group movies, 19 Architect Special Interest Group movies, 13 Education Special Interest Group movies, and three Vectorscript Special Interest Group movies. Making a total of 244 movies in 2013. The annual subscription cost is $249 US, which makes each movie  worth just over a dollar. I think that is pretty good value, especially when you realize that there are now seven years worth of resources on the website.
